Tuesday's With Movies: 5/31/11

Drive Angry: Probably a horrible film. But, sometimes it is fun just to throw in a movie that probably makes no sense, but has a ton of action. I have this film on my Netflix queue and I will watch it when it comes. I have no issues in saying that.

Biutiful: A film that was made probably for Oscar worthiness. Honestly there is nothing in these types of films that holds my interest at all. So, this will be a skip for me.

Passion Play: No clue what it is about. Just discovered it today, but it stars Megan Fox, Mickey Rourke and has an appearance by Bill Murray. Not a film I will run out to see, but if I find out more about it - it could end up here at some point.

Trailer: 50/50

OK, this looks amazing - if they do it right.

A comedy (or dramedy) about cancer. But, they have all the right participants - especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title role. And, quite possibly one of the best young actresses in Hollywood today - Anna Kendrick.

Anyway, the movie also stars Seth Rogen (who is friends with writer Will Reiser, whom the movie is based on). I really loved Rogen at the start of his career as a bit player in films like 40-year-old Virgin and Superbad - and I enjoyed him in his first starring role in Knocked Up, but I sort of feel like I can take or leave him as of late. But, here he is the sidekick to Levitt, so hopefully we get Rogen in small doses - the way we like him.

Another possible good thing about the film is Bryce Dallas Howard - who I haven't seen in too many things, but I really enjoyed her in The Village.

So - here is the trailer. Looks pretty amazing - and I hope they can pull it off.

Pocahontas

I can't believe that a Disney freak like me had never actually sat down to watch this film. Last year before we visited Disney World we tossed in numerous Disney films to get geared up - and allow my son to watch them for the first time.

Well, Pocahontas was watched by my wife and son on a day I was not there. So, I missed it again.

We are preparing for our surprise Disney trip coming up in a few weeks, so we have been watching some of the movies again. This time, I made sure to watch one of the few Disney animated features I had not seen previously.

So, the story of Pocahontas is pretty knowledgeable to most, but of course this is a Disney film so they obviously take liberties with the story.

Anyway, Governor Radcliffe (David Ogden Stiers) has compiled a bunch of men to take the journey from England to the New World. It is here that they will try to discover gold like the Spanish before them.

In their way, the savages as they call them - or the Native Americans who were here before them.

With Radcliffe's crew is an experienced savage hunter, John Smith (Mel Gibson). Who would have thought it would be him befriend one of the savages.

As Smith is exploring the new world, he is followed by Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) and her raccoon friend, Meeko (John Kassir). Smith discovers his spy and they develop a bond - soon falling in love with each other.

The Native Americans and the English, however, have other ideas and begin a small war against each other. Thanks to Radcliffe's lust for gold, many are killed. Smith is captured by the Native Americans and they threaten to kill him - but Pocahontas throws herself on top of him to spare his life.
Seeing this, all but Radcliffe tosses down their weapons - in hopes to bring both the Native Americans and the English together.

This was not one of the best Disney features, but it was still pretty good. A handful of the musical numbers were also pretty fun, especially "Colors of the Wind" and "Dig".

It was also fun to see - er I mean hear - a young Christian Bale in the role of Thomas, one of Smith's friends on the ship.

Final note: It's kind of ironic to see Gibson in the role of Smith. A role that basically fights for equality, especially after some of Gibson's recent rants.

So, cross off one of the few Disney films I have not seen yet. I think there may be a few more, so I will need to get to those as well.

Who? What? Where? #24

Jess continues to plow through the competition and further her lead as she correctly identified the person to the left as Luke Edwards and his character Les Jacobs from Newsies.

Nice job, Jess. Someone better come along and tighten this gap - or else she is going to run away with this.

So, good luck this week.

The concept is simple: each week I will place a photograph of a character within a film. It is up to you (the participant in the game) to tell me the following:

1) The name of the actor (or what the actor goes by in his acting profession).

2) The name of the character in the movie.

3) And, the name of the movie.

Each correct answer gets you a point - so if you get all three correct on a given week, you can get three points. I will keep a running chart each and every week. As of now, this will be played for bragging rights only - but we shall see what the future holds.

So here is week #24:

Theater Review: Rio

I figured since I don't get out to the movie theater too often, I would mark the films I actually do get to see there with Theater Review. I know it doesn't really matter, but I figured I would do it anyway.

So, a few weekends ago my parents wanted to take my son to see Rio and I tagged along. I had heard it was actually a decent film, so off we went.

The film is about Blu (Jesse Eisbenberg) a very rare blue makaw that gets knocked off a truck and found by a little girl, Linda (Leslie Mann). As Linda grows up, Blu and her are inseparable and have created quite a life for themselves in Minnesota

One afternoon, Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) visits Blu and Linda to inform them that he may be in fact the last male blue makaw on Earth. And tries to get them to come with him to Rio in order to mate with the last remaining female blue makaw, Jewel (Anne Hathaway).

Well, as they attempt to introduce the two 'love' birds, Tulio and Linda head out for a dinner and the aviary is broken into and the two birds are stolen. They are able to break free of their captives, but are chained together - and thanks to an issue Blu has the two of them have some huge things to overcome as she looks for her freedom and he tries to locate Linda.

The film is loaded with voice talent including, George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, Will I Am, Tracy Morgan and Jemaine Clement. A lot of excellent songs throughout the film as well that really fit with the environment.

As for the film, a pretty good story of overcoming obstacles to get what you want and finding something inside of you that you didn't know was there.

It was also very beautiful to look at with the many different colors and the scenery of Rio.

Tuesday's With Movies: 5/24/11

Gnomeo & Juliet: Another cute, little animated film that I have added to my Netflix queue so I can watch with my son. I really had no interest in seeing this film, but the trailers didn't look too horrible - so I thought a watch at some point would be fine.

Lemonade Mouth: I really have nothing to say about this film because honestly I have no idea what it is. It is apparently something from the Disney channel, but since I haven't watched anything on there that is not on Disney Junior - I have no clue what this is.

I Am Number Four: Saw the trailer and the premise seemed like a decent story - but nothing about this actually sucked me in. And, I have heard absolutely nothing about the film good or bad, so I am not sure what to think.

Royal Wedding: William & Catherine: I watched this lovely affair on TiVo with my wife. She really was into the wedding, I had no idea how much she liked the Royal Family. Anyway, it was a few hours of my life, and although it wasn't amazing, it was tolerable. I will, however, not be watching it again. So this DVD is not for me.

Best Animated Disney Soundtrack

So, I got to thinking.

I just sat down with my family and watched a couple of Disney films - Aladdin and Pocahontas (by the way I realized I had NEVER seen Pocahontas so a review of that will be up some time in the near future) - and I got to thinking, "What animated Disney film has the best soundtrack?"

Now, I know you are immediately thinking of so many great Disney songs in your head, right? But, it's pretty safe to say that each and every Disney film has at least one gem of a song.

Off the top of my head there's "Be My Guest", "Circle of Life", "Under the Sea", "When You Wish Upon a Star", etc.

But, which film has a soundtrack that if not all of the songs, most of the songs are great.

After sitting through Aladdin again, I have to think this one has to be near the top of the list with "Prince Ali", "Friend Like Me", "A Whole New World", "Arabian Nights", "One Jump Ahead". Each song sticks out.

Are there others? Yes there are. So I want to hear from you - what is the best (or your favorite) soundtrack from an animated Disney film? (must be animated, no Mary Poppins).

Thor

I am sure I have said this before, but it is probably worth restating - I love movies based on comic books, but I have never followed comic books. I was more of a sports card person than a comic book person.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the Iron Man films, so when they planned out this new Avengers film by releasing a few films beforehand I was pretty excited. I do think I am more excited about Captain America but this one still had me interested.

I knew nothing of Thor going in except that he was a god of some sort. So, I am not sure just how close to the comic books the film stayed.

So, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is, along with his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the son of the king of Asgard, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Thor, along with his hammer, is a mighty warrior and the heir to thrown. He is, however, a bit of a hot head and very cocky. After he enters the Frost Giants home against his father's wishes, he finds himself banished from the kingdom - much to Loki's enjoyment.

Meanwhile, on Earth, a group of scientists, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) notice a strange happening in the sky and end up hitting a man with their car - that man turns out to be Thor.

I will not ruin the film for anyone, but let's just say the rest of the film is Thor trying to fit in on Earth and figuring out how to protect Asgard from his brother and the Frost Giants.

Not sure if I love this film or not, I think I will have to watch it again, but I definitely enjoyed it - possibly more than Iron Man 2.

I thought that everyone was great in their performance. I had only seen Hemsworth in his bit part as Kirk's father in Star Trek, but he carried this movie as the lead very well. And, much like Rachel mentioned, I kept thinking I was hearing Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale.

One person who I didn't even know had a role, but had a sort of small yet integral part was Heimdall (Idris Elba) the gate keeper. I really enjoyed him in this role.

So, the grade I give this film is my impression on first watch. I will definitely have to give it a second look when it comes out on DVD, but I really liked what I saw initially - but there is a good chance I could actually love it upon further review.

Who? What? Where? #23

OK. So, this past week was a little weird. Jess came through right away and correctly identified the person to the left as Hugh Laurie for another point to add to her current lead.

Then, we had a bit of an outage here at Blogger and the post went missing. And, when it came back all comments had been erased. I thought there may be a chance for my first official stumping during the game, but The Mad Hatter jumped in late for his first two points in the game as he knew this was in fact Laurie's turn as Jasper in the live-action 101 Dalmations.

Congratulations to both Hatter and Jess. Very glad to have another person on the board.

The concept is simple: each week I will place a photograph of a character within a film. It is up to you (the participant in the game) to tell me the following:

Reaction: Survivor: Redemption Island

Another Survivor has come and gone, and another one kept me interested all the way through. Though I think the inclusion of Boston Rob may have had a lot to do with that. It's amazing that we are able to get through some of these Survivor seasons without some of our favorite characters, but we do - although I still think when we have those we know on board right away, the game is just that much better.

So, I figured I would give some of my thoughts on the season - that I can recall.

First, the worst kept secret in the world was the return of Boston Rob and Russell Hantz. Ever since Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains the Rob and Russell head to head game was almost inevitable, and Survivor brass jumped on it as soon as they could.

Second, the ouster of Russell. I have to say looking back on other seasons and being a constant viewer of the series, throwing a challenge never seems to be a good idea. Russell's tribe was immediately intimidated by him and wanted to throw an immunity challenge to get him off. Only a few weeks into the game, and (if my memory doesn't deceive me) at at time when their tribe was in complete control and had not lost a challenge. What were they thinking? Well, they got their wish, but they also lost their mojo and one by one the rest of them were picked off.

Third, I got a little scared when Andrea was the member that came back into the game from Redemption Island. With her return it brought the tribe to three girls and two boys - remember the Parvati led girls' tribe? I was having a flashback. But, Rob still had his trusty immunity idol and smartly used - despite not having to because the ladies stuck with Rob anyway. So, what was thought to be an issue for Rob, actually became the best thing to happen for him.

Fourth, Boston Rob finally winning Survivor after four time playing and almost 10 years of his life. He came very close in Survivor: All-Stars as he came in second place to his now wife, Amber. This time, he had an even bigger target on his back (much like Russell) but managed to maneuver his way through the game in a way only he could and was named the ultimate survivor. I have to think that Rob now has to be crowned the greatest Survivor player ever - better than Parvati, Russell and two-time winner (probably didn't deserve either), Sandra.

Finally, Rob had a great night during the final, but the best part of the night (to me) came from David. I always thought David was a smart player and understood the game, but he got trapped with his alliance - which was ultimately his downfall. You can tell he was smart when Rob and his tribe-mates ousted Matt to Redemption Island for the second time - muttering "Genius". The greatest portion of last night's finale was David's talk to his jury members. This is what has been missing in the last few Survivors as the jury has been burned by the best player and ultimately they were so scorned they were bitter and didn't vote for the person who should have one the game (I am thinking Russell in two instances as well as a few others). But, David flat out told everyone who played the best and who controlled the game and that is why HE deserved to win. It was so refreshing, it was the way the game was supposed to be played when it was invented and for the most part in the beginning the right person won - it has been lately that they haven't been rewarding the person who plays the best game. I hope this continues.

Overall, a pretty decent season - brought higher because of the inclusion of Boston Rob and Russell. It's so much easier getting into a season when you actually know the person.

Congratulations to Boston Rob. He deserved it and probably has for awhile. Now, they are apparently bringing back two others for the next season of Survivor and I am interested in seeing how the new contestants welcome (although it may help the "All-Star" contestants because this season was filming while Redemption Island was being aired). The best way a tribe should act is to use these former contestants to get them as far as they can, then dispose of them when it is possible - NEVER THROW A CHALLENGE.

That is all.

Tuesday's With Movies: 5/17/11

Try to see the extra special pattern in these films this week.

The Mechanic: The Jason Statham and Ben Foster film about a hit man and his new apprentice. What doesn't sound great? I enjoy Statham and really enjoy Foster, plus the addition of a little violence and blow ups - that sounds like a watch to me.

The Rite: Yet another film about a holy man and an exorcism, this one starring Anthony Hopkins. Haven't even seen the original Exorcist so I will not be running to see this at any time. The trailers gave me nothing to interest me.

The Other Woman: A film that I had not ever heard of, starring Natalie Portman. The genre is listed as comedy/drama, but the film's plot resembles something that is pure drama - so I am not sure where the comedy comes in. I will probably check it out.

The Roommate: A story about a pair of college roommates, one of which becomes a bit obsessed with other - so much so that it becomes a bit violent. Not my type of film. So no.

Quick Shots 11

OK, some of these films I haven't seen in a long time. I will do my best to remember.

Title:
The Other Guys

Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Keaton, Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes, Ray Stevenson, Anne Heche, Steve Coogan

Brief Synopsis: Allen Gamble (Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) are police detectives stuck on the sidelines, especially with super cops Chris Danson (Johnson) and P.K. Highsmith (Jackson) on the force. When an accident allows for another pair of cops to make name for themselves on the force, Hoitz tries to get paper pusher Gamble to get in on the game.

Opinion: I have to say that the opening sequence of this film was totally not what my wife and I were expecting. We looked at each other and couldn't believe it. The rest of the film was pretty mediocre in my opinion. I laughed a few times and I enjoyed Wahlberg's insane cop. The best part of the film, hands down, was Keaton. He was amazing as the police chief and he needs to be in way more films.

Grade:

Title: Whip It

Starring: Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis

Brief Synopsis: Bliss Cavendar (Page) is a teenager who has no real sense of who she wants to be, despite her mother's (Harden) insistence that she enter beauty pageants, even though she has no real interest in them. Her friend Pash (Shawkat) attends a roller derby contest together and falls in love with the game. She isn't old enough, but lies about her age and joins an unsuccessful team with her new role model, Maggie Mayhem (Wiig).

Opinion: I didn't have much hopes for this film, but I really enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed the roller derby portions of the film, and to my surprise it looked somewhat realistic. It was also pretty funny and a good coming of age film as Page's character develops into a stronger woman through her derby playing and new role models.

Grade:

Title: Tangled

Starring: Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman, Jeffrey Tambor, M.C. Gainey

Brief Synopsis: This film is Disney's telling of Rapunzel. Rapunzel (Moore) is stolen from her parents (the king and queen) by Mother Gothel (Murphy) because of her magical hair that helps keep people young. Gothel keeps Rapunzel in large tower and doesn't allow her out at all. Every year on her birthday the kingdom lets off tons of lanterns, which she can see from her tower. On one birthday, she wants to go out and see them, but Gothel will not allow it. Flynn Rider (Levi) has just stolen her crown from the castle and tries to hide in her tower, but gets attacked by her instead. In order to get his crown back, Rider must take Rapunzel to see the lights and return her safe and sound.

Opinion: This was a fantastic film. I am a huge Disney buff anyway, but I really came away liking this film and Rapunzel is now my new favorite Disney princess. Lots going on in the film that I enjoyed, especially the humor. The attack scene with Rapunzel and Flynn was great, the amazing back and forth with Flynn and Max (a horse) was outstanding, and the Viking thugs were hilarious. One thing I felt was a little lacking (at least on the one viewing) was the songs. Usually there are a few songs that stick out in a Disney film, but the only one that really jumped out at me was the Viking song in the tavern.

Grade:

Title: Yogi Bear

Starring: Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, Anna Faris, Tom Cavanagh, T.J. Miller, Andrew Daly, Nate Corddry

Brief Synopsis: Live action film about the Hanna-Barbara cartoon. Ranger Smith (Cavanaugh) needs to raise $40,000 to save Jellystone National Park. He teams up with Rachel (Faris), a documentary filmmaker, to throw a blow out and raise the money. Unfortunately, he not only has to deal with assistant deputy Ranger Jones (Miller), who is sabotaging the event to become head ranger - and the two talking bears in the park, Yogi (Aykroyd) and Boo Boo (Timberlake).

Opinion: This wasn't horrible, plus my son loves it. The bad guy was way over the top and it was a pretty basic storyline, but it seemed to work for this film.

Grade:

Title: Love and Other Drugs

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Josh Gad, Judy Greer, Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria

Brief Synopsis: Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal) is a bullshitter who can find a way to sleep with just about anyone - including his boss' wife which gets him fired from his job. This leads him into a job in pharmaceutical sales with Pfizer. During his time there he meets a girl, Maggie Murdock (Hathaway), who suffers from Parkinson's disease. The rest of the film is their up and down relationship and his rise as a representative.

Opinion: First of all, let me just get it out of the way, the nudity was outstanding - good looking people. Now, this was a great and new way of making a romantic comedy. Plus the addition of Oliver Platt is always a good thing.

40/50: Pulp Fiction

I don't know what took so long for me to finally watch this. Despite thinking I knew most about the film itself, I was still blown away.

Pulp Fiction is basically the telling of a series of events, not exactly told in chronological order.
It was a lot less bloody than I was expecting, but that was ok because it didn't take anything away from the actual film.

As good as the story was, the best part about the film was the dialogue. I absolutely loved the dialogue in The Social Network because it was so smart and it seemed like each and every word was so important. I got that same feeling when watching Pulp Fiction. Most of the film really has no important dialogue, but the way it is spoken in the film - even about a stupid quarter pounder with cheese - it seems important.

Anyway, the film mostly revolves around a man that we do not actually see for most of the film. Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) is a crime lord, who employs two hit men, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson). Wallace also makes a deal with a boxer, Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), to take a fall in a match and make Wallace a ton of money.

Those are the two main stories of the film. Two other smaller stories involve Vega and Wallace's wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) - you know that iconic dancing scene, right? The final story is both the beginning and the ending of the film, featuring a couple of wanna-be criminals, Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer).

The absolute best part of the film are the scenes involving Travolta and Jackson. The dialogue between the two of them is amazing and I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Just perfection in words.

This was my second Quentin Tarantino film (Jackie Brown being the other), and this was much better. I hope the other Tarantino films are as good as this one - I am very intrigued now and can't wait to see them.

Who? What? Where? #22

So, I am getting bad at actually getting these in on time. But, I guess it just makes it more difficult to get in on this when it finally is posted.

Anyway, congrats (as usual) to Jess who correctly guessed the person to the left as David Strathairn in his amazing role as Whistler in Sneakers.

With that win, Jess earns three more points and moves even further ahead of Matt for first place.

Good luck this week to everyone.

The concept is simple: each week I will place a photograph of a character within a film. It is up to you (the participant in the game) to tell me the following:

39/50: Robin Hood

I don't know the true/main story of the original Robin Hood. My memories of Robin Hood stem from Disney's version and Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I guess you can also toss in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

So, when I watched the Russell Crowe version of Robin Hood I was immediately confused. Isn't the Sheriff of Nottingham supposed to be the bad guy? Well, according to the Prince of Thieves he is. Or, was it Prince John?

In this version it appears to be France that
is the enemy. Until we get to the end, but I am getting ahead of myself.

So, Crowe stars as Robin Longstride, and fights in the Crusades with a man called Robert Loxley. Longstride along with a trio of others, Will Scarlett (Scott Grimes), Little John (Kevin Durand) and Allan A'Dayle (Alan Doyle) return to England to notify Loxley of his son's death and Robin is asked to pretend that he is in fact Loxley returned from the war - and also take care of Loxley's girlfriend, Lady Marian (Cate Blanchett). Did you get all of that? I know it's confusing.

Anyway, in my opinion this film was setup as the beginning of a series of films. The ending, after Robin helps defeat the French, Prince John burns the treaty that was drawn up to relieve taxes against the commoners. He also declares that Robin is an outlaw.

Here is where the film, or next film, should start up. This is the setup we needed to begin where everything belongs. Robin is an outlaw. Prince John is the villain.

But, we will probably not get another film because this one was mediocre in its reception. Too bad because I feel they were setting up for something that could be fun. I have said before I am not a Crowe fan, but I handled him here. I am a fan of Durand, Grimes and Mark Addy (who played Friar Tuck), however, so I would have liked to have seen what happened next.

So, my grade reflects this particular film, not how good I feel the future films could have been.

Grade:

For Funsies

The best JD-Janitor exchange. I just saw it again and had to toss it up here.

Tuesday's With Movies: 5/10/11

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never: NO. I do not have the Bieber Fever. There is absolutely nothing on Earth that will make me watch this movie. In fact - it scares me.

No Strings Attached: This is the first of what looks to be two of the same-type of films wit
h Friends With Benefits being released sometime this year. I have heard some bad things about the film itself, and usually Ashton Kutcher is the kiss of death. But, Natalie Portman's presence and the fact that she will be scantily dressed a lot has me very interested.

Blue Valentine: I know absolutely nothing about this film except that for some reason it was originally given an NC-17 rating - apparently for a sexually explicit scene. It is in my queue, so when it gets here I will have to check it out.

The Illusionist: I have heard some really good things from both critics and fellow bloggers - but as of right now I really have no interest in seeing this film. That may change in the future, but for now I don't see myself watching it.

The Hit List: The only really reason I am putting this on this list is because it stars Cuba Gooding, Jr. and I have to ask - what the heck has happened to him? He won an Oscar for Jerry Maguire and has been in high profile films like Men of Honor and Pearl Harbor. But, he has truly fallen off the map. Can he get it back?

My Life In Movies Blog-A-Thon

The imaginative people over at Fandango Groovers have set up another blogathon. There are a bunch of others participating - check it out here.

This was actually extremely difficult. In most years I found multiple films that I love. And in some years, films that I like, but nothing that I really love. So - here is my life in movies. My favorite movies from 2010 to my birth year of 1981. Enjoy:

Sorry this isn't more spectacular. I saw this at the last moment and wanted to participate.
